My current main halyard is a rope-to-wire setup. I want to replace it with rope. Does anyone know how long it needs to be on a CS36T? Also are there any recommendations to the kind of rope to use? What thickness of rope is best? Should the shackle be permanently attached in a spliced eye or is a bowline knot good enough?

I have a 1979 with Proctor spar and they are 122 feet long to the cockpit. I used 10mm or 3/8" Yale Vizzion.. I prefer a good splice but then a gain I am spoiled as I know the guys at Yale Cordage and they do my splicing.. No lumps in that splice!!

Hi Tom,
I used to have an 8 1/2 X 11 " sheet that had all rigging sizes including blocks, winches, standing rigging, running rigging sizes and turning blocks. Can't findn it now. Someone on the list would definitely have those specs.
Shouldn't be a problem to measure existing halyard in place. If all else fails, buy 150'. That's enough to reach from winch, up/down mast to the waterline.
On the other count, I would splice an eye into a headboard shackle. A bowline will do temporarily. Remember, a bowline may slip out if no tension on the halyard, especially if using new line.

On the 36T the rope section of the halyards are 7/16 from the factory. If you have the owners manual it has the lengths of the halyards. I found with the main halyard when replaced it I had to add a few feet by Wilson's recommendations. If you are not sure ask Wilson....

Brad, I suspect the 7/16" was more for the wire to rope splice and the age and stretch of the polyester line used back then. Today we have some tremendous options that we did not have back when wire/rope was being used. Today you can easily reduce to 3/8" or 10mm and still have higher working loads and less stretch than the old 7/16" stuff and 3/8" costs less too.. I found 120' to be the perfect length for a 1979 with Proctor spar. Actually they are all 122' but I don't find I need the extra 2'..

yes, You are correct there. 3/8 would be sufficient for the halyards but 7/16 is easier on the hands when hoisting the sail.
